Effect of ecological and biological factors on the uptake and concentration of trace elements by aquatic organisms at Edku lake OceanDocs
Abbas, M.M.; Shakweer, L..
The effect of temperature, pH and trace elements concentration in the ambient water on the uptake and accumulation of Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb in various organs of fish and parts of aquatic plants of Edku Lake were studied. It was found that higher water temperature and lower pH during summer increased the rates of trace metals uptake by the most common fish species Oreochromis niloticus. The concentrations of Cu, Zn, and Ni in the various organs of fish were affected by the concentrations of these elements in the water. Cu, Zn, Ni and Pb attained higher concentrations in the roots of Eichormia crassipes if compared with their concentrations in the other parts of this aquatic plant. Sex of fish can be considered as an important factor affecting the accumulation...

Background and Reference Values of Metals in Soils from Paraíba State, Brazil Rev. Bras. Ciênc. Solo
Almeida Júnior,Agenor Bezerra de; Nascimento,Clístenes Williams Araújo do; Biondi,Caroline Miranda; Souza,Adailson Pereira de; Barros,Felipe Martins do Rêgo.
ABSTRACT Soil contamination by heavy metals threatens ecosystems and human health. Environmental monitoring bodies need reference values for these contaminants to assess the impacts of anthropogenic activities on soil contamination. Quality reference values (QRVs) reflect the natural concentrations of heavy metals in soils without anthropic interference and must be regionally established. The aim of this study was to determine the natural concentrations and quality reference values for the metals Ag, Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Cr, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sb and Zn in soils of Paraíba state, Brazil. Soil samples were collected from 94 locations across the state in areas of native vegetation or with minimal anthropic interference. The quality reference values (QRVs) were (mg...

Synergy between cadmium and zinc in bean plants cultivated in multi contaminated soils Agronomy
Almeida, Lorena Gabriela; Silva, Dayane Meireles da; Jorge, Adelcio de Paula; Souza, Kamila Rezende Dázio de; Guilherme, Luiz Roberto Guimarães; Alves, José Donizeti.
Agricultural species are subjected to a variety of biotic and abiotic stresses, which are the main limitations to crop production. In this context, contamination by trace elements is characterized as an abiotic stress that represents an environmental problem. Due to the physical and chemical similarities between cadmium and zinc, these elements may interact in the environment and may cause antagonistic or synergistic effects. In this way, physiological mechanisms to exclude, detoxify or compartmentalize trace elements that are in excess are crucial for plant survival when exposed to high concentrations of these elements. In this way, the aim of this study was to understand the physiological responses of Phaseolus vulgaris plants subjected to increasing...

Effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on young vines in copper-contaminated soil BJM
Ambrosini,Vítor Gabriel; Voges,Joana Gerent; Canton,Ludiana; Couto,Rafael da Rosa; Ferreira,Paulo Ademar Avelar; Comin,Jucinei José; Melo,George Wellington Bastos de; Brunetto,Gustavo; Soares,Cláudio Roberto Fonsêca Sousa.
Abstract High copper (Cu) levels in uprooted old vineyard soils may cause toxicity in transplanted young vines, although such toxicity may be reduced by inoculating plants with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of AMF on the plant growth, chlorophyll contents, mycorrhizal colonization, and Cu and phosphorus (P) absorption in young vines cultivated in a vineyard soil contaminated by Cu. Commercial vineyard soil with high Cu levels was placed in plastic tubes and transplanted with young vines, which were inoculated with six AMF species (Dentiscutata heterogama, Gigaspora gigantea, Acaulospora morrowiae, A. colombiana, Rhizophagus clarus, R. irregularis) and a control treatment on randomized blocks...

m) concentrations of Al, Sr, Ba, Mn, Rare Earth Elements (REE) and Th isotopes were determined over time. We obtain percentages of dissolution in agreement with the general knowledge about the solubility of these tracers: Th approximate to Al < Heavy REE < Light REE < Mn < Ba < Sr. For Mn and Ce, precipitation/adsorption occurs at the end of the experiment probably due to their oxidation as insoluble oxides. Particulate residence time of the tracers ranged from less than 1 day to 10-14 days. During the experiment, biological activity has a control on the dissolution process through the remineralization of particulate organic carbon, In the 30 m experiment, the observed dissolution of aragonite indicates that the pH of the incubation solution...

Organic Matter Reduces Copper Toxicity for the Earthworm Eisenia fetida in Soils from Mining Areas in Central Chile Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Ávila,Gonzalo; Gaete,Hernán; Sauvé,Sébastien; Neaman,Alexander.
The Aconcagua River basin (Central Chile) is one of the most important agricultural areas in the country. However, several copper (Cu) mining operations are located in the basin. The objective of the study was to determine Cu toxicity for the earthworm Eisenia fetida (Savigny 1826) in the agricultural soils of the basin. We determined the production of cocoons and juveniles of earthworms in the studied soils. The soils differed in the concentrations of organic matter (OM, range 2-6%), pH (range 7.3-8.3), texture (from loamy sand to clay loam), and total Cu concentrations (range 230-960 mg kg-1). Concentrations of Cu and OM in the soils were the variables that determined the earthworms’ biological response. In contrast, pH and texture did not affect this...

Abrupt changes of temperature and water chemistry in the late Pleistocene and early Holocene Black Sea ArchiMer
Bahr, Andre; Lamy, Frank; Arz, Helge W.; Major, Candace; Kwiecien, Olga; Wefer, Gerold.
[1] New Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, and published stable oxygen isotope and Sr-87/(86) Sr data obtained on ostracods from gravity cores located on the northwestern Black Sea slope were used to infer changes in the Black Sea hydrology and water chemistry for the period between 30 to 8 ka B. P. ( calibrated radiocarbon years). The period prior to 16.5 ka B. P. was characterized by stable conditions in all records until a distinct drop in delta O-18 values combined with a sharp increase in Sr-87/(86) Sr occurred between 16.5 and 14.8 ka B. P. This event is attributed to an increased runoff from the northern drainage area of the Black Sea between Heinrich Event 1 and the onset of the Bolling warm period. While the Mg/Ca and Sr/Ca records remained rather unaffected by this...

Olivines in main-group pallasites: magma-ocean cumulates or partial melting residues? ArchiMer
Barrat, Jean-alix; Ferrière, L..
Main-group pallasites (MGPs) are meteorites mainly composed of Fe-Ni metal and olivines, the latter being considered as one of the largest sampling of extraterrestrial mantle material available for study on Earth. We analysed the rare earth element (REE) concentrations of olivines from six MGPs to understand better the processes of formation of their parent mantle. All the investigated samples display very low REE abundances, and enrichments in both light REEs and heavy REEs. We interpret the light REE enrichments as a fingerprint of terrestrial contamination. The least contaminated olivines have higher heavy REE enrichments than those inferred for olivines directly crystallised in a magma ocean. Such enrichments in heavy REEs are possible if the mantle of...

Multi-Element Determination of Trace Elements in Natural Water Reference Materials by ICP-SFMS after Tm Addition and Iron Co-precipitation ArchiMer
Bayon, Germain; Birot, Dominique; Bollinger, Claire; Barrat, Jean Alix.
We report on an improved method for determining trace element abundances in seawater and other natural waters. The analytical procedure involves co-precipitation on iron hydroxides after addition of a Tm spike, and measurement by inductively coupled plasma-sector field mass spectrometry (ICP-SFMS). The validity of the method was assessed through a series of co-precipitation experiments, using ultra-diluted solutions of a certified rock reference material (BIR-1). Results obtained for four natural water reference materials (NASS-5, CASS-4, SLEW-3, SLRS-4) are in agreement with published working values for rare earth elements, yttrium, vanadium and, when available, for hafnium, zirconium, thorium and scandium. A set of proposed values with uncertainties...

Zn, Co, Cr, As, and genotoxic effects in the ichthyofauna species from polluted and non-polluted/protected estuaries of the São Paulo coast, Brazil Anais da ABC (AABC)
BRAGA,ELISABETE S.; AZEVEDO,JULIANA S.; KUNIYOSHI,LEONARDO; FÁVARO,DÉBORAH I.T..
Abstract: The human impact on estuarine regions results in an increasing concentration of trace elements in the environment, exposing aquatic organisms. In this study, Zn, Co, Cr, and As were determined in the muscle tissue of some fish species from Santos-São Vicente (SSV), a recognized polluted region, and in the Cananeia estuary (CAN). Genotoxicity was also determined for the evaluation of the chronic effect on ichthyofauna, to enlarge the bank of environmental data regarding the effects of pollution, and to suggest other fish bioindicator species that may contribute to monitoring programs. The obtained data showed a similar profile of an accumulation of Co and Zn in Micropogonias furnieri and Chaetodipterus faber, where: Santos Bay > CAN > inner...

Mineralogy, magnetic susceptibility and geochemistry of Fe-rich Oxisols developed from several parent materials Scientia Agricola
Camêlo,Danilo de Lima; Ker,João Carlos; Fontes,Maurício Paulo Ferreira; Costa,Antonio Carlos Saraiva da; Corrêa,Marcelo Metri; Leopold,Matthias.
ABSTRACT: Fe-rich Oxisols on mafic rocks in Brazil generally have high magnetic susceptibility with high contents of some trace elements. These are taxonomically similar soils; however, differences in magnetic and geochemical properties may affect agricultural or environmental usability and subsequent management. This study investigated the pedogenesis of Fe-rich Oxisols from various parent materials and evaluated the lithogenetic influence on magnetic susceptibility and trace elements contents. Soil samples were collected from Bw horizons in 13 Rhodic Oxisols and a Typic Oxisol developed from several parent materials in Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Soils were analyzed by X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and magnetometry. Soil chemical analyses consisted of...

Plankton as biological pump for contaminants in marine ecosystems: a transmediterranean approach (Merite Hippocampe cruise, april-mai 2019) ArchiMer
Carlotti, François; Tronczynski, Jacek; Tedetti, Marc; Pagano, Marc; Garnier, Cédric.
Recent research on the bioaccumulation of organic and trace element contaminants along trophic food webs suggests that plankton plays a central role as a 'biological pump' for pollutants. The MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE project (oceanographic cruise in April- May 2019) aims at studying the interactions between plankton and contaminants (metallic, organic plastics) at atmosphere/water/biota interfaces via a North-South trans-Mediterranean approach in contrasted areas (primary production, fishing zones, ecoregions, polluted bays). The target contaminants are on the lists of priority pollutants and substances of Regional Conventions (OSPAR) and EU directives (WFD, MSF). The expected results are to provide a better understanding of the transfer processes of contaminants...

GEOCHEMICAL BACKGROUND IN AN OXISOL REA
Cembranel,Adir S.; Sampaio,Silvio C.; Remor,Marcelo B.; Gotardo,Jackeline T.; Rosa,Pábolla M. Dalla.
ABSTRACT Geochemical background establishment is indispensable to determine the actual state of contamination of soils and sediments. However, no scientific consensus exists regarding the methodology for determining these values. In this context, this study aimed to establish the geochemical background in an Oxisol (Rhodic Hapludox) by means of an integrated method that uses direct and indirect soil analyses to identify the most appropriate calculation methodology. Soil samples were collected in a permanent preservation area of the Cascavel River watershed, PR, Brazil. The elements Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, and Zn present in soil samples were quantified by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The use of a permanent preservation area is...

New insights into productivity and redox-controlled trace element (Ag, Cd, Re, and Mo) accumulation in a 55 kyr long sediment record from Guaymas Basin, Gulf of California ArchiMer
Chang, Alice S.; Pichevin, Laetitia; Pedersen, Thomas F.; Gray, Victoria; Ganeshram, Raja.
A high-resolution, 55 kyr long record of chalcophile and redox-sensitive trace element accumulation (Ag, Cd, Re, and Mo) from MD02-2515, western Guaymas Basin, is investigated in conjunction with patterns in stratigraphy and productivity. High opal concentrations (~59 wt. %), representing increased diatom production, coincide with laminated sediments and dilute the concentrations of organic carbon (Corg) and metals. A similarity between opal and normalized Corg, Ag, and Cd concentrations suggests delivery to the sediments by diatom export production, while patterns in normalized Re and Mo accumulation suggest a different emplacement mechanism. Although Mo enrichment in organic-rich, laminated sediments typically represents anoxic conditions at other...

Trace Element Determinations in Fe-Mn Oxides by High Resolution ICP-MS after Tm Addition ArchiMer
Charles, Claire; Barrat, Jean-alix; Pelleter, Ewan.
In order to propose an optimal analytical procedure specific to ferromanganese (Fe-Mn) oxides, we investigated different modes of data acquisition using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results of trace element and Rare Earth Element (REE) determination in eight Fe-Mn nodules and crusts (FeMn-1, GSMC-1, GSMC-2, GSMC-3, GSPN-2, GSPN-3, NOD-A-1 and NOD-P-1) are presented here. The analytical procedure involves chemical dissolution of the Fe-Mn oxides and addition of a thulium (Tm) spike. The correction of measured values from potential isobaric interferences was investigated using both corrections based on mono-elemental solutions, and data acquisition in the high-resolution mode. The obtained results show that the high-resolution...
